FAQs

AutumnWhen does the next course start?
The Fall term of the free 10-week introductory course, Philosophy Works! begins on Tuesday, September 12th at 7 p.m.

What does the introductory course cover?

The course includes rich offerings for anyone interested in the world in which we live. Concepts considered include elements from some of the great philosophic teachings and teachers of the world, including Socrates, Plato, Emerson, Confucius, Shakespeare, the Bible, the Upanishads, Buddha and Shantananda Saraswati, a modern exponent of the philosophy of unity. A simple exercise in awareness is introduced in the first week.

What is the format of the classes?
An instructor presents material, and facilitates discussion based on what arises. Students are encouraged neither to accept nor reject the ideas put forward, but to test these ideas in their own life, in the light of their own experience.

Who are the instructors?
Following the principle of learn and teach, instructors are appointed on the basis of having a firm understanding of the philosophic principles. They have attended the School for a number of years and have demonstrated an appreciation of the practice of philosophy in their daily lives. All instructors remain students as well, since the learning process never ends.

What do I need to bring with me?
Just an open and inquiring mind. At the end of each class, a handout with key points and quotations is provided.

Do I need any previous qualifications?
No. The courses are suitable for all adults. The course is not religious, but it does address the spirit in mankind.

Will I get a certificate or qualification?
These are not academic courses. They are practical rather than theoretical. There are no exams.

How much does it cost?
The 10-week introductory course is free.

What about further studies?
On completing the Philosophy Works! course, for those wishing to continue, the School offers regular courses over three terms per year, and, after a period of time, the practice of meditation. For further information, phone (845) 895-9912.
